Story and Photography By Mark Poppe

Kelsey’s Hope was first developed on the rivers near Vancouver as an attractor pattern for catching coho in fresh water. Over the years it has proven to be a versatile fly, taking chinook, chum, bull trout and rainbows, as well as proving deadly for coho both in the river and in the ocean. (Go here for the original Kelsey's Hope tying instructions).

Mark Poppe, who fishes around Campbell River, has found it is a highly effective pattern for pinks and he’s tied up some tube fly versions of Kelsey’s Hope that he plans to use for chum. He sends the following report:

You'll notice, from the pictures of the patterns, that we like to use circle hooks.  My partner, Bonnie, and I have found that with this style we have dramatically reduced the number of foul hooked fish, and this is especially true when they are holding in schools.  That same feature has also reduced the number of irritating snags.  I recommend using nothing larger than a size 6 hook for pinks.

By using a 12-15 lb test tippet we reduced the number of lost flies and the heavy line did not seem to both the fish.

When we fished the Campbell River this past summer, the water was fast and clear.  The sparsely dressed flies  worked extremely well.  Bonnie preferred the bead head variety because her line did not sink as quickly as mine.

The real key was getting the fly down to the bottom, no matter how much they were jumping at the surface.

The same pattern worked for us on the beach for pinks when nothing else would.

The tube flies illustrated here were tied for chum. At this writing they are untested, but I'm optimistic!  Sorry if they're ugly, it’s my first attempt at tubes.

Here are the ingredients:

Hook:   Mustad C71S SS Circle Streamer; size 6
Thread: Black
Body:    Silver or holographic silver tinsel (or braid)
Wing:    Dark blue over dark green Flouro-fibre, tied "fold over" style

*You'll notice that one of the tubes has royal blue flouro-fibre vs the dark blue.  We found that colour worked well also.
